Do we first need to teach a person before baptism?
IThe Jews were in selfish and silent control of the information about the true God. It was different in the time of Jesus. Afterwards, Peter preached under influence of the Holy Spirit when 3000 listened, heard, and were baptised. The great commission states that there is a sequence to baptism that is preceded by teachings through which, the Holy Spirit convicts the student to the Gospel of Christ. Matt. 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.†Mark 16:16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.†To believe means you were convicted of the Gospel of truth by the Holy Spirit, and you made a choice to follow His guidance! Believing does not occur in a vacuum. Faith and growth requires ongoing interest and learning into a knowledge of Christ with at least a broad basis of theology that brings one to the diligent “following.†The story of the Eunuch in Acts 8 illustrates this. Act 8:27 “So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.†30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?†31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?†And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 33In His humiliation His justice was taken away, and who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.†34So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?†35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?†The Godhead wants their followers to be thinkers: Isa 1:18 ““Come now, and let us reason together,†says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. In all walks of life, we required enough accurate information in order to come to, and make the right choices. Learning and studying helps us to make the right choices on more that only baptism.
