Is Sabbath indeed the 7th day? Where does the principle of using the moon to determine time come from?
The seventh day is indeed Saturday as attested to by the following biblical and extra biblical support: The seventh day is called the Sabbath (Gen. 2:2-3) The order of days in Luke 23:54 – 24:1 are as follows: Preparation day (the day Christ was crucified), Sabbath, the first day of the week. This has faithfully been celebrated for the past 2000 as Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Sunday. Thus the Sabbath has to be Saturday. The seven day cycle has been not been changed by God throughout history. He put it into motion at Creation, and it has continued, unchanged to our today. It is interesting that in over 108 languages of the world, the word for Saturday is defined as Sabbath: Sabbaton (Greek), Sabbatum (Latin) Sábado (Spanish), Sabbado (Portuguese), Sobota (Polish), Shamba (Hindustani), Ari-Sabtu (Malay), Sobota (Bohemian), Subbota (Russian), As-Sabt (Arabic), Sabatha (Ndebele), Sabata (Shona) Jesus Himself, a Jew, kept the Sabbath every Saturday. If the Jews of his day were keeping the wrong weekly Sabbath as some lunar sabbatarians claim, why didn’t He reprimand them as He did on other moral issues? The moon could not have been used to determine the seven day weekly cycle because it was created on the fourth day. If God wanted time to be governed by it, He would either have created the moon on the first day, or reset the week after 4 creation days – none of which are found in Scripture. The argument of the moon used to determine time is based on verses such Gen. 1:14 and Ps. 104:19. These verses are used by lunar Sabbatarians argue that God gave the sun and moon to govern seasons, days and years, and would therefore govern the Sabbath, which they believe to be a religious festival. Note the following: Nowhere in Scripture is the moon said to govern the 7 day weekly cycle (as can be seen from the above argument) Gen 1:14 merely states that the sun and moon govern days and years by the fixed movement of the earth around the sun, which is in conjunction with the moon. Lunar Sabbatarians wrongly translate that the word ‘seasons’ as ‘festivals’, which all the formal literal translations do not do (ASV, ESV, JPS, NASB, NKJV, NRSV, RSV, YLT). Since the Sabbath is regarded by them as a festival, it thus has to be regulated by the moon. If we however say that in Gen 1:14 ‘seasons’ means ‘festivals’ (of which the Sabbath is a part), then God structured the astronomical bodies with sin in mind (feasts were only required due to sin) – a concept that is unscriptural.
