Why is the Sabbath holy?
The Bible clarifies that the number of God is â€7â€, and it is an interesting fact that a day, a month, a year and seasons have associations with nature, but the week comes from one source, namely Creation week. Gen.2:1 “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.†It is very clear here that only the seventh day, our present Saturday, had been blessed and sanctified. Gen.26:5 “because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.†It is quite clear that God liked letting His people know what was expected of them. Ex. 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it, you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.†Below describes the second time the law was given. Deut. 5:12 “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.13Six days you shall labor and do all your work,14but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it, you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.15And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.†This comes across as a very clear directive that we need to honour the Sabbath as a “space in time†filled by Christ for togetherness with us. Eze.20:12 “Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.†Eze.20:20 “hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.’†The Sabbath was given in Eden before sin and is clear that we need it in our lives, especially after sin arrived. The Bible states that we will also honour God’s Sabbath in heaven. Isa. 66: 23 “And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me,†says the LORD.â€
