Which day is the seventh day, Sabbath?
I am so grateful for the attitude that you will be lead by the Holy Spirit as it means that you are comfortable with the total evidence of the Bible: 2 Pet. 1:20 “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.†We all know from the decalogue that there are only one of the commandments that acknowledge that you are not an atheist or Buddhist and that is the fourth commandment: Ex. 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.†Most modern Christians adhere to the idea that the seventh-day Sabbath, the present-day Saturday, is a Jewish custom and therefore no reason to apply it to modern-day followers of Jesus. It is rather strange that they have connected the Edenic law of the week, (that was not Jewish) being the seventh day Sabbath, with the Jews. Abraham, the father of the Jews arrived at least 2000 years later. Gen. 2:1 “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.†Most calendars will confirm the weekly cycle as Sunday as being day 1and Saturday as being day 7 supporting the Bible information. This is true even on Android and I-phones. You would find the following on the internet: The first day of the week (for most), Sunday has been set aside as the "day of the sun" since ancient Egyptian times in honour of the sun-god, beginning with Ra. The Egyptians passed their idea of a 7-day week onto the Romans, who also started their week with the Sun's day, “dies Solis.†On Wikipedia the following with regard the seventh day: We should observe the seventh day of the week (Saturday), from even to even, as the Sabbath of the Lord our God. The evening is at sunset when day ends and another day begins. No other day has ever been sanctified as the day of rest. The Sabbath Day begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday. In the latter part of the 20th century a change came about to start the week on a Monday and people the attributed the seventh day to Sunday: According to international standard ISO 8601, Monday is the first day of the week. ... Sunday is the 7th and last day of the week. Although this is the “international standardâ€, several countries, including the United States and Canada, consider Sunday as the start of the week. Once people understand that the original weekly cycle is different to what secular modern society wants to portray it to be, the first response is: “How can we be sure the original weekly cycle is still retained.†If there was a chance for that to happen it was neutralized by the fact that during Israel in the wilderness the following happened: Ex. 16:21 “So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted. 22 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ †24 So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field.†There is clearly no evidence here that the days somehow got mixed up. From this period forth, there exists accurate data that the weekly cycle remained stable and some hardliners will now confirm this. Some may ask: “but was there not a change in the calendar from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar?†There was a change, and it was only a date change since they did not originally allow for the leap year factors that resulted in a slow movement whereby normal springtime started moving closer to Winter. So, it was simply a date alteration and not the cycle. Modern teens wear bracelets with the inscription, WWJD - meaning “What would Jesus do?â€. Let us then look at the way our Lord Jesus Christ approached the Sabbath. Luke 4:16 “So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.†I feel very comfortable to adhere to a custom that Jesus adhered to. We need to also remember that God, during Creation formed a space on day one, and filled it on day 4. The space created on day 2, He filled it on day 5. The space created on day 3 and filled it on day 6. On the seventh day, He created a SPACE IN TIME and filled it with Himself. God created an appointed “time†and He confirms in the decalogue that it carries significance. If your wedding anniversary is December 15 your wife will not buy into a false idea the December 16th as also good enough to celebrate your anniversary, would she? By making an appointment with someone, there is a time element as well as a location attached to such. Amazingly giving, God made an appointment with us to meet Him on the seventh day Sabbath, where ever we find ourselves … He comes to us. Should we not be available at His appointed time, we lose the blessing of His presence. See what the Lord says. Eze. 20:12 “Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.†Eze.20:20 “hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.’†It would be important to note that there is only one area of the moral law that deals with time, and that is the 4th commandment that starts with “remember.†Daniel warns us that there will be an attempt to change time and laws … God’s time and laws. Dan. 7:25 “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.†This Little Horn power was clearly identified during the reformation as the papacy, and in 321 AD, the anti-Jewish sentiment culminated in Constantine doing the following: He changed the Bible seventh-day Sabbath to the first day. There was a backlash against the Jews combined with the volume of new pagan, sun worshipping converts into Christianity. To accommodate these events, Constantine made a law, changing the day of worship from Sabbath (Saturday) to Sunday. Below is the further detail hereof: Since Sunday was merely another day of work in the Roman Empire, On March 7, 321, Roman Emperor Constantine I issued a civil decree making Sunday a day of rest from labour, stating: All judges and city people and the craftsmen shall rest upon the “venerable day of the sun.†Jesus confirmed that such change will not be a directive from heaven, since God remains the same always and nothing will change Him. Heb. 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.†Matt. 5:18 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.†There are several other Christians that will ask whether the Sabbath was nailed to the cross. Col. 2:14 “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.†This portion supports the ceremonial laws and not the moral law. The moral law was written by God’s finger on stone and was stowed away inside the ark of the covenant. The ceremonial laws or law of Moses was written by himself, and placed on the side of the ark. Deut. 31:26 “Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there as a witness against you;†The Pope came to use Revelation 1:10 the “Lord’s day†as Sunday, with no authority, since the Bible gives preference to the seventh-day Sabbath, as “the day of the Lord.†Matt. 12:8 “For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.†The Bible inspired by the Holy Spirit confirms that to break one of the commandments, you are guilty of breaking ALL the commandments. James 2:10 “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.†There are some Christian believers that call on the idea that we are under grace, and no longer under the law. It is very clear, however, that Eden was lost because of disobedience. Therefore it is also very clear that obedience would be part of what Jesus’ followers would do. 1 Pet. 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:†Following in the footsteps of Jesus in His custom of being in the synagogue on the Sabbath, does not equate to legalism but to obedience to God’s Law. One would rely upon grace alone if there is a law that still condemns you. Mount Calvary became a reality because the Godhead could not ignore Sinai. The question remains: Would those people still alive at the end of earth's history continue being commandment keepers, including and particularly the fourth commandment? Indeed they would! Rev. 12:17 “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.†Rev. 14:12 “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.†Rev. 22:14 “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.†We have now confirmed that the seventh-day Sabbath (Saturday) was a reality before sin entered the world, and it will remain to be a reality in the New Earth when we are saved from this earth and sin is no more. Isa. 66:23 “And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,†says the LORD.†In most other languages you do not have our possible confusion as the name of the Sabbath clearly supports what it represents. In the week of creation, the Godhead rested on the seventh day Sabbath, and in the week of redemption, Christ died on the preparation day the Friday at 15:00. His followers, and even Jesus Himself in death, kept the Sabbath day in rest to acknowledge redemption. Early on the first day of the week, Sunday, the women came to finish the work they had to stop doing on late, Friday afternoon. • The Sabbath is the best news for man: • That He has created us perfectly; • That He has redeemed us completely; • That He loves us immensely; and • That He will restore us ultimately! We keep the Sabbath because we are saved in obedience to His word and not to gain His favour, but it remains the Bible’s appointed time to engage with our Lord and Saviour. I need to be fit for heaven by living the life here on earth that I will be living there, as I walk in His footsteps.
