Should a man have only one wife?
It is very interesting that God will meet a man in his fallen state, yet, where man is at that stage is not God’s ideal for mankind! The Bible provides proof that marriage comes from Eden, and God was present at this ideal marriage. Gen. 2:22 “Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.†24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.†The lineage of those following God and those in rebellion split with Seth and Cain. The seventh from Adam was Enoch, who was directly taken to heaven. It follows the seventh in the lineage of the rebellious that becomes another interesting fact. Gen. 4:19 “Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.†The rebellion was not in God’s ideal for mankind. Throughout history, we see a rebellious spirit, and let’s look at Acts about this today. Acts 17:30 “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,†The Bible reconfirms the ideal for a man serving God: 1 Tim. 3:1 “This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, …†We need t keep in mind that marriage between husband and wife is a type of God married to His true bride, the pure white church. The Bible nowhere supports the idea of multiple wives!
