Is women being ordained Biblical?
The question should really be: “Can we rely on the Biblical record to direct us, or was it only the custom of the day?†We are clearly directed in God’s Word. 1 Pet. 2: 21 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:†Rev. 14:4 “... These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.†We are all in agreement that there is no discrimination in the Bible: Gal. 3:26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.†But is there a pattern in the Bible, and is there a pattern in a secular society? Let us find the perspective on the latter. Modern society wants to diminish the contrast between the sexes. The women’s movement states that if a female stays home, bear kids and raise them, she is discriminated against and cheated out of building her own career, etc. The result is a disruption in society and an attack on the family. This results in the now the family “need†for a double income, and progressively wanting more more more. It revolves around “I†and “me.†The result turns into children raised by a nanny or grandparents with, no leading figures at home when children arrive from school. Table dinners have disappeared. Roles are so-called changed by many stay-home dads that deprives the home of a mother carer, and a dad having been breadwinner or priest. The demarcation is lost. We live in a society where children are in daycare, crèche or other forms of care from the ages of a few months up. These children are removed from the influence and impact of the home and any moral compass, referring particularly to the Christian compass. It is lost. The only entity gaining is Satan, having lots of secular minds that are not exposed to enough, or any Christian guidance that may blot out evil. Adults and children alike turn to their only friend, the internet, and technology for recreation that forms individual norms and routes to happiness. After WW1 and WW2, industrialization allowed products to be created ‘en masse’. This was great for the advertising industry that honed in on telling us what we need, why we need it, and why we need more of what we have. This has resulted in paying more for receiving less. We overlook that the material will not allow us true happiness since happiness is not destiny. It is an attitude on your way to eternity. To be really happy we need to be in tune with our God Creator. Ps. 77:13 “Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Who is so great a God as our God?†In the Old Testament, we encountered the so-called patriarchal society. Without saying that one was better or, was more important; yet, it confirmed the defined roles as the man being the provider, defender, and priest in the home. The mother was the one caring and addressing the more emotional needs of the family! She created an environment where the whole family could grow. Most of the records in the Old Testament support God talking to the head of the family eg. Abraham, but especially where the sacrificial system is portrayed, the head of the family being the father, was the one building the altar and managed the sacrifice. The 12 sons of Jacob formed the tribes of Israel. The whole Levitical system is supportive of the males having a specific function to stand between mankind and God! There is not one report of a female priest despite there being a female prophetess or female judge. This signifies that the Lord uses everybody, and no one is a second class citizen. Judges 4:4 “Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time.†We also have the history of Esther saving her people, but not functioning as a priest, and not clouding the picture of those standing between God and man. When we arrive in the New Testament and Jesus calls the 12, we see all 12 males accepting the call. There is ample evidence of woman followers, but not one formed part of the New Testament picture of Jesus using the male for a specific role. Paul also had a long discourse on the headship and symbolism around Jesus and His church: Please read the discourse in 1 Cor.11, please. The SDA is privileged to have a female prophetess, and there exists no council from her to change direction. In this day and age, our direction moves away from what God and His Word teach and wants. We are more concerned about what society wants. Society wants a place in the sun for LGBT people with no suggestion that the Bible is clear about this lifestyle. Sin should be called by its name yet, now the love of Jesus is portrayed as not only accepting everybody but also tolerating their sinful habits and lusts, without them having to change their lives to parallel with that of Jesus. Yes, the Good News is available to everybody coming to accept Christ the way we are. Phil. 1:6 “ being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;†Rom. 16:26 “but now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith— “ Faith that is not reflected in obedience, is no real faith! Let us be conservative with ourselves and liberal with our brother. It seems that the information in the Bible supports specific roles for males and females, and I would be on the side to adhere to the nuances of the Bible and not secular society.
