Is hell a place, or simply an event that will mark the destruction of sin and sinners?
As sinners baptism will make us ready for translation. As sinners, we require a water baptism that is followed by the fire of the Holy Spirit. It is interesting to consider that the earth was baptized by water at times of the flood, and it will be made ready for the saints when it is renewed by the fire that would be destroying the wicked. Matt. 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.†Matt. 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:†We have an example of this in: Jude 1:6 “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.†When Christ withdraws His protection as a result of wickedness, these wicked people are left to reap the natural results of their rebellion: Heb. 12:29 “For our God is a consuming fire.†The only place of safety on the new earth will be to be inside the walls of New Jerusalem. Revelation describes this final reward of those who continued to ignore the calling to be part of God’s people. Rev. 20:14 “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.†Rev. 19:19 “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.†We now have the opportunity to make the only wise choice, and that is to be inside the city since the outside will be made new with fire as described below: Mal. 4:1 “For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.†Let us now plan to be inside the new city in the presence of the Creator by being baptized now by choosing the water baptism, and He will use His choice to baptize us by fire as I reflect Him!
