Why do certain sincere Christians believe in false doctrines if it is the Holy Spirit who leads people to obey God's Law?
The question posed is not clear on what false doctrines are found in which sincere Christians. The answer will, therefore, be generalised. We live in an era in which people are easily impressed by the supernatural. If they are prone and keen to go in that direction, they may react to certain experiences looked upon as signs and wonders in the belief that their theology is kosher. This may result in them finding no desire or need to explore the scriptures in order to check by the law and the prophets the power in their lives is from God or the adversary. Matt. 24:24 “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.†People may be lead to think they are following Christ but will be devastated to hear the opposite. Matt. 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’†2 Tim. 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.†People will, and is developing a taste for the alternative that could often be a reflection of the previous non-adherence to what was shown to them by the Holy Spirit. This disobedience would have resulted in a change of direction … away from God. Think of Saul, who was at one stage prophesying and filled with the Holy Spirit. Still, by his attitude, he went into a downward spiral away from God and landed up arriving at the witch of Endor, totally lost. Mark 7:7 “And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ It is, therefore, possible for people to think that they are following Jesus and instead are walking the other direction … of man and away from God. The fact that people proclaim to be followers of God does not automatically mean that they are indeed such. It is possible to be walking one’s own selfish direction without the need or want to change. A Lady in my denomination wrote: We have far more to fear from within than from without. The hindrances to strength and success are far greater from the church itself than from the world. Unbelievers have a right to expect that those who profess to be keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, will do more than any other class to promote and honour, by their consistent lives, by their godly example and their active influence, the cause which they represent. But how often have the professed advocates of the truth proved the greatest obstacle to its advancement! The unbelief indulged, the doubts expressed, the darkness cherished, encourage the presence of evil angels, and open the way for the accomplishment of Satan's devices.—Selected Messages 1:122 (1887) Our success to avoid this problem in our lives revolves around one thing only. 1 Pet.2:21 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:†Rev.14:4 “These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.†Our protection lies in being a follower of Jesus Christ.
