How to relate to 3 days and 3 nights?
It is critical to understand the manner in which to calculate time, in the time of Christ. They talk about the inclusive way of reckoning time. For instance: A ruler may have come to power in the second last month of a given year, and was perhaps overthrown in the 4th month of next year. WE would say he ruled for 6 months, but part of a year was counted as a full year so they would have said he ruled for 2 years, especially in Judea. In the time of Christ, the Passover fell on Thursday and the Lord’s supper was added that Thursday evening! The sequence of a day is also important to understand in Bible times! Gen. 1:5 “And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.†Jesus’ ordeal started in the dark part of day 6; our Thursday evening, and he was betrayed by Judas during the night and was taken to Pilate and Herod. They chose Bar-Abbas instead of the real Son of the real Father and he was crucified on the light part of the 6th day, Friday as it was confirmed as being the day of preparation - our present Friday. John 19:40 “Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.†Luke 23:44 “Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ †Having said this, He breathed His last.†They then put Him in His tomb without any preparation as it was sunset on Friday (our present Friday) and fast approaching Sabbath the 7th day. Jesus in His death kept the Sabbath and did not see corruption. Ps. 16:10 “ For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. Peter then gives clarity that this was also Messianic. Acts 2:27 “For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ 29“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses." Jesus then remained in the tomb but rose early on the light part of the first day our present Sunday morning: Mark 16: 9 “Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.†Luke 24:1 “Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.†This fits with the sign of Jona 3 days and 3 nights and his ordeal until resurrection lasted full 7th day and parts of the 6th day and parts of the first day of the week!
