How does one differentiate between faith and feelings?
The book Hebrew gives us a definition of Faith: Heb. 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.†Here we are thinking of faith in somebody but critical that as you learn to know this Person you have faith, and the result is that you are able to rely upon Him in perfect trust. This supports the requirement to develop an intimate relationship to build knowledge around a person. In this case, the Person turns out to be very trustworthy, and the relationship is a result of His ability to deliver with regard to the faith put in Him and His faithfulness unto us! One needs to understand that a feeling is an emotion and is not built on evidence and/or reason. Therefore it may change as the outside temperature changes. We as Christians have to act on principle and not on feeling. Our supreme example is Jesus on Calvary. Everything about that event screamed for Him to acknowledge His feelings, and to rather save Himself from the cross. His love for us as a principle love “agape†kept Him on the cross whilst reconciling God with mankind. He became that ladder of Jacob’s dream connecting earth with heaven!
