Dreams: should we be cautious?
Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.†Acts 2:16 “16But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in Heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. 21And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.’†As we near the close of probation and earth’s history, the Spirit of the Lord will be poured out and dreams may be one of the mechanisms. The passages above we read in full some of the signs in nature, and chronologically, these occurred centuries ago. The dark day in history and the moon in blood happened on 19 May 1780. As the world’s wickedness increases, the Lord balances that with the pouring out of His Spirit. We should therefore still expect that dreams may be used for the advancement of His cause. We have a warning: Matt. 24:24 “ For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.†We, therefore, have a warning that the supernatural will be increased before Jesus returns. It is clear that no modern dream will repudiate theology already given by the Holy Spirit, as it will not nullify the present truth. Isa. 8:20 “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.†Certain people with pentecostal backgrounds are very into this direct link to the throne of the Creator of the universe, and they almost get verbal directions. It is interesting that they don’t have frequent directions about by the same Spirit that the Sabbath is still a reality, and that death is a sleep from which we will be awakened when Christ returns. If one leans towards signs and wonders, it puts you up to be misled if you have not made the Bible truths the foundation of your relationship with Jesus. Signs and wonders are more for the unconverted to alert them to the presence of the Mighty One. It is vitally important that everything needs to be built on historic Bible truths. The thoughts that we dwell upon and spend time contemplating, will direct the content of our dreams. It is a fact that most dreams are a result of rich meals and disturbed sleep; not intending to belittle someone else’s vertical experience. To rely on dreams and not on the foundation of good Bible study, is setting one up for the final deception.
