Does Isaiah 66:24 say that we do not really die?
Isa 66:24 “And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.†Again, using hyperbole, Isaiah states that the “worm shall not die.†This is of course in contrast to those carcasses of people who have died. Their fire shall not “be quenched†is in contrast to the victims of the fire that are terminated by the fire. Isaiah is describing the final eradication of the wicked. The destroying elements will do and finish their work. God gives a promise below: Psalm 91:8 “Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked. At some point in the future before the complete consummation of the unrighteous, this will transpire. But finally, all the wicked will desist. Zechariah 14:12 “And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. Malachi 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,†Says the LORD of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branch.†Malachi 4:3 “You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,†says the LORD of hosts.†The Psalmist declares: Ps 37:10 “For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. Ps 37:20 “But the wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the LORD, like the splendour of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke, they shall vanish away. 2 Peter 3:12 “looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.â€
