Info on the Sabbath rest?
Heb. 4:8-10 “For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Although the Greek for “Jesus†is ‘Joshua’, in this verse it is actually referring to Joshua of the exodus that could not give them rest. The piece uses the Greek “Katapausis†and “Sabbatismos†interchangeably. In Moses’ writings in Exodus, the Israelites kept holy the Sabbath day in rest but, the day was being missed or, lost by the translators then as they simply used the word “rest.†Exo. 5:4, 5 “Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labour.†5And Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them rest (Shabbat) from their labour!†The word used, would not have allowed them only to rest but he wouldn’t allowed them to Shabbat: We know that these people were persecuted in Egypt for honouring the Sabbath. It creates an antitypical idea that the final exodus of those people honouring the Bible Sabbath will again be persecuted. The explanation I postulate is that we also keep the Sabbath as an acknowledgement that we are not able to save ourselves still, by keeping the Sabbath we accept what Christ has done for us. Now we rest in ‘His saving work for us’, and for most of us it is still something to really attain in the future. Sabbath keepers are accused of legalism. However, this portion of the Bible supports the fact that real Sabbath keepers confirm that they rest from trying to save themselves. They understand and rely completely on the atonement of Jesus and the work He has accomplished for us. By resting in we provide the space for Him to do the work in us! We pray this helps you in your relationship with Christ.
