How to keep the Sabbath?
One may have more of a blessing on the Sabbath with the question phrased: What should I do on the Sabbath versus what should not be done? Matt. 12:12 “How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.†Luke 6:9 “Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the Sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save a life, or to destroy it?†The Bible mentions the following: Mark 15:42 “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,†God made sure that there is enough manna given to His people on Friday for them to collect ample portions to last them throughout the Sabbat. This was as en example of not working on the Sabbath. This also gives clear proof that Friday, the day before the Sabbath was also called the ‘day of preparation’ wherein all work would be done and completed preventing unnecessary task to be done on the day of rest – Sabbath Paul even suggests that money should already be put aside beforehand so as not to involve financial matters on the Sabbath. 1 Cor. 16:2 “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.†Num. 15:32 “32Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation. 34They put him under guard because it had not been explained what should be done to him. 35Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.†36So, as the Lord commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died. Israel was now being taught again to honour the Sabbath and adhere to the fourth commandment. We have general directives on the Sabbath in Isaiah. Isa 58:13“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, 14Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.†WE get in this the distinct feeling that this is a day with lots of blessings to the participant, in it being a space in time filled with Jesus. One would then surmise that it would be critical to keep your appointment with Christ on this His holy day." Ex. 20:8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.†We are clearly required by God to keep the Sabbath holy. As the person who acknowledges the day as the Sabbath day should see to it that those in your jurisdiction, under your roof and in your boundary should benefit from the Sabbath by all resting on this day … your servants and even the animals in your care. In a modern slant, we should recognise that even technology rests for the 24 hours including your phone, tablet or computer. The Sabbath is not just another day. When it is honoured as God intends for us to keep it the day holy, it will benefit every person involved. The most amazing thing is this, and it will not feel like sacrifice as one will not want to be putting the appointment with your Creator at risk.
